Doncaster business embraces ‘Peat Free’ gardening for a sustainable future

Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster recently visited leading Doncaster-based Evergreen Garden Care Ltd in Hatfield, to discuss the importance of consistent industry standards for peat free products and to witness the fabulous work they are doing.  

The global business is a certified carbon neutral company who achieved their circular economy certificate in 2022. They recruit locally and produce millions of bags of Peat Free Compost every year to a multitude of outlets such as Amazon and B&Q.

Their garden fertilisers can be found in most DIY stores, supermarkets, and garden centres and all their products are now ‘peat free’ ahead of European legislation. If you see the MiracleGro, Weedol and Levington brands, then the likelihood is that these products have been manufactured at Evergreen here in Doncaster…a phenomenal 15,000 bags of peat and 72,000 bags of compost are supplied from the site every day!   

Their key markets are in Europe – UK, France, Germany and Australasia and business is good with the UK giving a 7.5% increase as opposed to the rest of the world which stands at 4%.

110 people are employed at the 27-acre Hatfield site with £8 million investment taking place over the last 3 years alone at the Doncaster site with even more committed in the future.

Evergreen is a fantastic local and national business that engage in local supply chain wherever possible. They have several local suppliers that provide their raw materials from topsoil, grit, sand, green compost that are all within a 15mile radius, contributing more than £2 million per year.
