Doncaster Businesses urged to prioritise Fire Safety this Festive Season

As the festive season approaches, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (SYFRS) is urging business owners across the region to take proactive steps to minimise fire risks in their commercial premises. With darker days, increased celebrations, extended working hours, and the presence of new staff members, the risk of fires escalates during the winter months.

The Business Fire Safety and Community Safety teams from SYFRS are emphasising the critical importance of heightened fire safety awareness at this time of year. Reviewing and enhancing fire safety management systems not only reduces fire hazards but also fosters a robust safety culture, ensuring the well-being of all employees, customers, and visitors.

“Preparedness is the key to preventing emergencies,” said Chris Marsden, Business Support and Training Officer of SYFRS. “By regularly testing your fire safety plan and ensuring all employees are informed about fire safety protocols, businesses can significantly mitigate risks.”

To assist businesses in maintaining high safety standards, SYFRS recommends the following proactive measures:

  • Conduct a thorough review of your fire safety management systems.
  • Regularly test and update your fire safety plan.
  • Provide fire safety training for all employees, particularly new staff.
  • Ensure all fire safety equipment, such as extinguishers and alarms, is in working order.
  • Identify and address potential fire hazards, such as overloaded electrical systems or improper storage of flammable materials.

“By taking these steps now, businesses can enjoy a safer and more secure holiday season,” added Chris.  “Our priority is to work together with the business community to reduce risks and protect lives.”
