Doncaster Calibration business measuring up to success

by Heather Hamilton

Doncaster-based PremCal are a family-owned business set up by founder Paul Niles in 1997.

More than 25 years on, they are one of the UK’s leading calibration companies recognised and accredited by its accreditation body UKAS providing comprehensive services across many sectors calibrating most types of equipment.

Covering almost all industry sectors they offer precision calibration services and engineering solutions to a range of sectors including Rail, Aviation, Medical, Engineering and Manufacturing on items such as crimping tools, torque wrenches, levelling equipment, pressure gauges and temperature meters to name but a few.

Working for prestigious companies such as Wabtec UK Corp, London Underground, Boeing UK and 2Excel they command a highly respected position both locally and nationally.

The business currently provides static and onsite mobile laboratory calibration services to Wabtec UK in the City. After detailed and in-depth discussions with their senior management team they were asked to further their current service offering to provide an enhanced service of mobile calibration of instrumentation throughout the UK; that can only be provided using very sophisticated state of the art calibration equipment.

An exciting opportunity for Premcal and one that would catapult their offering locally and nationally to the industry forefront for calibration service provision. However, it required the purchase of specific very expensive cutting-edge state of art industry equipment.

The business approached Business Doncaster, the economic arm of Doncaster Council for financial support. Following a needs assessment, they were successful in being awarded a UKSPF Productivity Grant. This facilitated the purchase of some of the equipment required.

Councillor Glyn Jones, Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Housing and Business said: “It’s businesses such as these that drive our local economy and foster growth, proving that success comes with hard work and a commitment to excellence and innovation. I wish them many more years of growth and prosperity”.

The company also benefitted from a business grant administered by the Business Doncaster team during the pandemic, that enabled the accelerated provision of an additional full compliant mobile laboratory. Their mobile calibration service provision enables PremCal to be agile and responsive to clients’ requirements and ensures minimum down time and fast project turnaround times.

The mobile laboratory is fully kitted out and environmentally controlled offering flexible on site working across the UK to provide same day delivery and service.

Looking to the future, they aim to build on their current professional team and on their highly technical proficient team. To support this, they have already appointed a recently AMRC qualified Technician and an Apprentice who has commenced his training at the AMRC with a clear programme to add further technical apprentice opportunities along with the recruitment of experienced Engineers.

Paul continues to engage and support Business Doncaster through attendance at various Business Masterclasses and the Manufacturing Forum.
