New Sensory Space to launch at Frenchgate Shopping Centre

A brand new sensory space designed to provide calm and comfort is set to officially launch on the ground floor of Frenchgate Shopping Centre in Doncaster on Thursday 3st April 2025, coinciding with Autism Awareness Week.

Developed by Ambispace in partnership with Autism Plus and Nook Wellness Pods, the sensory “Nook Stop” will offer a dedicated environment where visitors can relax, unwind, and manage sensory overload.

The space has been carefully designed to create a calm and inclusive environment for autistic individuals, people with sensory needs, and anyone who may need a quiet space during their visit to the shopping centre. Visitors to The sensory Nook Stop will also have the opportunity to meet the Autism Plus employment team, who will be on hand to share expert advice and guidance on tailored employment support for neurodivergent people.

"We're thrilled to launch the first sensory Nook Stop at the Frenchgate shopping centre," said Kevin Wheatley, Managing Director of Ambispace.

"Our aim working closely with Autism Plus, is to create a safe and welcoming space where neurodivergent people can take a break from overwhelming environments. This is of great benefit to individuals and families as well as supporting hard pressed retailers through increased footfall in these challenging economic times. Through this unique venture where business and charity come together, we are serving both the community and elevating local retail by making shopping much more accessible for everyone."

There are six Sensory Nook pods available in the Frenchgate Centre, each one uniquely tailored to provide a safe, welcoming environment with relaxing lighting, soothing sounds, and interactive sensory equipment designed to help reduce anxiety and support self-regulation.

The Nook Stop will open part time to begin with, to ensure a calm and controlled environment. Visitors are encouraged to book through the Nook Stop website in advance to secure their preferred time slot in the Sensory Nook of their choosing.

Katie Mitchell, Marketing Manager at Autism Plus, added: "We’re proud to be working with Ambispace on this exciting project. For many autistic individuals and people with sensory sensitivities, busy public spaces can feel overwhelming. Having a dedicated calm space like this can make a huge difference, helping people to feel more comfortable and confident when out and about."
