SYNETIQ’s climate targets validated by Science Based Targets initiative

SYNETIQ announced it has received validation of its greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets from the Science Based initiative.

SYNETIQ, an IAA company and one of the UK’s leading vehicle salvage, dismantling and recycling companies, announced it has received validation of its greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets from the Science Based initiative in line with the company’s ambition to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

The targets apply to SYNETIQ’s direct operations, with commitments to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 50.4% and scope 3 emissions by 58.1% per vehicle processed by 2032.

“Our commitment to environmental responsibility and our actions to limit climate change underpin our vision to lead our industry toward a more sustainable future,” said Helen Carling, Commercial Director of SYNETIQ. “Having our targets validated by SBTi is a way to align our strategy with the latest science and provide us with a clear roadmap of action over the upcoming years and beyond.

“We’ve learned a lot on our journey so far,” Carling continued. “From establishing the embodied carbon in each vehicle part we reuse, to the carbon footprint of the salvage auction vehicles we sell on behalf of our clients.”

Below are SYNETIQ’s SBTi-approved targets:

  • Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 (Market) GHG emissions 50.4% by 2032 from a 2022 base year.
  • Reduce scope 3 GHG emissions 58.1% per vehicle entering into operations by 2032 from a 2022 base year.

SYNETIQ has set out its emissions reduction priorities across seven areas: transport; estate; energy; circularity and waste; culture; offsetting; and compliance. In December 2021, SYNETIQ signed a letter of commitment with the Science Based Target initiative and joined over 2,000 companies worldwide setting actionable, science-based greenhouse gas emission reduction targets to limit global warming.

SBTi is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reduction targets in line with the latest climate science. It is focused on accelerating companies across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.
